Why 1MillionGirls Exists: The Story Behind the Mission

By Dr. Rochel Marie Lawson

There are moments in life that don’t just shape you…
They call you.

Moments that whisper to your spirit,
“This is bigger than you.”

And if you’re brave enough to listen…
They become your legacy.

This… is one of those stories.

A 16-Year-Old Girl with a Dream

At just 16 years old, I did something no one in my family had ever done before.

I went from high school straight into a four-year university on a scholarship.

I was proud.
I was determined.
I was stepping into a future that felt bigger than anything I had ever known.

But what no one saw…
What I was walking into behind the scenes.

While I had a scholarship for school…
I had no money to live.

My parents were going through a divorce.
There was no financial support coming in.
No safety net. No backup plan.

Just me… and a dream I refused to let go of.

The Breaking Point No One Talks About

Let me be real with you…

There were nights I wanted to give up.

My first year in college… I was broke, struggling, and questioning everything.

I remember thinking,
“Maybe this isn’t meant for me…”
“Maybe I should just go back home…”

Have you ever been there?
Where the dream feels so far away… and the struggle feels so real?

That was me.

But then something inside of me shifted.

The Thought That Changed Everything

Every time I thought about quitting…
I remembered something powerful:

I was the first.

The first in my family to walk this path.
The first to step into a four-year university.
The first to dare to do something different.

And I asked myself…

“If I give up… what happens to the girls who come after me?”

That question… changed everything.

Because I realized…
This journey was never just about me.

It was about the doors I was opening for generations of women after me.

Finding a Way When There Was No Way

So, I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to quit.
I was going to figure it out.

I secured an internship with a television station in San Diego…
And that opportunity opened doors to modeling gigs that helped me support myself through college.

Was it easy?
Not at all.

But it was necessary.

Because I had made a promise to myself:

No matter what… I would finish.

And I did.

I graduated in four years.

And then… I went even further.

I went on to earn five more degrees—funding my education every step of the way.

The Seed of 1MillionGirls Was Planted

But here’s what stayed with me through all of it…

The struggle.

The stress.
The uncertainty.
The moments of wondering how I would make it to the next day.

And I thought…

“There has to be a better way.”

I knew I couldn’t be the only young woman experiencing this.

Brilliant. Capable. Driven.

Yet… held back by finances.

That’s when a vision began to form in my heart.

A promise.

The Promise That Became a Movement

I told myself:

“One day… when I am able… I will create a way for young women to go to college without the struggle I faced.”

Not just survive college…

But thrive.

To walk into their future with confidence…
Support…
And the financial backing they deserve.

That promise… is now 1MillionGirls.

Why 1MillionGirls Exists

1MillionGirls exists because there are millions of brilliant young women…
With dreams bigger than their circumstances.

Girls who have the grades.
The drive.
The determination.

But not the financial resources.

And we are here to change that.

We are here to:

Break financial barriers
Open doors to higher education
Empower girls to step into leadership, purpose, and legacy

Because when you educate a girl…
You don’t just change her life.

You change her family.
Her community.
And generations to come.

This Is Bigger Than One Girl… This Is Legacy

There is something divine about this mission.

A calling that goes beyond logic.

Because this isn’t just about scholarships.

This is about answering a deeper question:

“What happens when a girl is finally given the opportunity she deserves?”

She rises.
She leads.
She transforms the world around her.

And that… is the future we are building.

Your Invitation to Be Part of This Movement

Right now… You are not here by accident.

Something in you led you to this moment.

And I want to ask you…

Will you be part of changing a girl’s future?

Here’s how you can step into this mission:

Join our mailing list – Stay connected and be part of the journey
Become a sponsor or partner – Help us expand our reach and impact
Share this mission – Someone in your world needs to see this
Donate – Help us send young women to college through grants and scholarships

Because together…

We are not just helping one girl.

We are building a future where one million girls rise into their greatness—without limitation.

A Final Word From My Heart to Yours

I was once that 16-year-old girl…

With a dream.
With no money.
And every reason to give up.

But I didn’t.

And now…
I’m here to make sure another young woman doesn’t have to walk that path alone.

This is more than a mission.

This is a movement.

And it’s calling you to be part of it.
